The village of Dolton, Illinois is attracting many families that are looking for a great place to settle down and buy a home. The city of Chicago is located to the north of Dolton, and South Holland borders it to the south. The village known as Dolton was once a part of Riverdale until 1892 when each became incorporated as a separate village. The Little Calumet River forms part of Dolton’s border to the south, and this river also flows past Blue Island, another beautiful Illinois area that has seen a lot of growth and promise over the years. There is evidence of human occupation in the Dolton area dating back as far as around 1400 A.D. The tribes that inhabited the area during that time have not been able to be identified yet, but evidence indicates that the Miami and Illinois Algonquian tribes were in this area around this time period. A man by the name of George Dolton settled in the area back in 1835 and ran a ferry with another man by the name of J.C. Matthews. George Dolton’s sons also settled in this region, and this is where the name Dolton got its origins.

In the 1840’s, German immigrants came into the area and a distilling company, along with a logging company were established. Once the railroads were developed, Dolton began to grow economically. Irish Catholics came in the 1850’s and built railroads, and from 1866 to the year 1910 the area was called Dolton Station. Some of the earliest agricultural products from Dolton included hay and grain, but eventually Dolton became a major manufacturing location for outputting agricultural items for the city of Chicago. Potatoes, onions, and cabbage were just a few of the products that Dolton shipped to Chicago, and with the output of all these agricultural products came the need for packing and canning industries to develop in the area, giving more business opportunity to locals who inhabited the region. Over time, Dolton became known for its clay deposits and several brick companies began purchasing these clay deposits for brick building. Eventually Dolton expanded its manufacturing industry to include numerous products, such as bakery equipment, furniture, cement and much more. By the 1960’s the Calumet Expressway (now called the Bishop Ford Freeway) gave car and truck drivers improved access to the city of Chicago. The population of Dolton has increased quite a bit over the years, and it was estimated that over 25,000 people lived in the area back during the 2000 census. That number has probably augmented, and by the time the results of next census come out, the village will probably see a nice increase thanks to Dolton’s wonderful living conditions. Many African Americans inhabit the Dolton region, but the area has become a melting pot of many individuals from diverse ethnic backgrounds. Dolton has beautiful parks and several wonderful museums that keep the local history intact and is only a short drive away from Chicago where many people commute to their jobs.
