Blue Island, Illinois is a beautiful place to live with a unique history. Blue Island is situated on the south side of an old glacial moraine. Back during the last Ice Age, Lake Chicago covered the entire area, and there was a ridge projecting outward from the lake that looked like an island. This building served Lake County, Indiana residents until 1844, and then the building was taken apart and sent up via raft on the Calumet River and rebuilt on Blue Island as a hotel, called the American House Hotel. It was a boarding house at first, but then it became a home for retired soldiers after the Civil War. The building has undergone a lot of renovation over the years, and today it is a private residence.
