Blue Island, Illinois is a beautiful place to live with a unique history. Blue Island is situated on the south side of an old glacial moraine. Back during the last Ice Age, Lake Chicago covered the entire area, and there was a ridge projecting outward from the lake that looked like an island. Early pioneers named the island “Blue Island” because of all the rapturous blue flowers that were growing on the ridge. It was basically an island-like formation sticking out of a large body of water. Of course this was a long time ago, and the geography of the land has changed quite a bit since the end of the last Ice Age, and now Blue Island is apart of Cook County, Illinois, a growing city that offers opportunity and entertainment. The area known as Blue Island was settled back in the year 1835. Most of the initial settlers were tavern and store keepers. Some blacksmiths inhabited the region, as well as, wagon people. In the early days, Blue Island was known for its livestock trading and as a stopover location for Chicago travelers. German immigrants came into the area in 1858 and set up multiple breweries, and by the 1870’s, Blue Island became a big time trading location because of the arrival of the Rock Island Railroad. Throughout the 20th century, Blue Island was well known for its oil refining, food industries, and brick designing abilities. Modern day Blue Island is a place where many families have decided to settle down and make a living. The downtown region is a popular attraction. Locals and tourists will find antique stores, art galleries, and outstanding places to eat when heading to the downtown area. Business development in Blue Island has been very successful over the years, and many business owners fair pretty well in this gorgeous Chicagoland city. The parks and recreation district of Blue Island offers residents the opportunity to engage in social events. Nature trails, golf courses, such as the Meadows Golf Club, scenic landscape, and tons of fascinating history await visitors thinking about coming to Blue Island for a visit or to relocate. Blue Island is also a great place to receive a wonderful education. Schooling was offered in Blue Island as early as 1845 with the development of a private school for girls, and the Whittier School was constructed in 1854, providing public education to the youth at the time. Now Blue Island has numerous public and private schools for children of all ages. It is also interesting to note that the oldest building in Blue Island, Illinois was an Indiana courthouse and post office. This building served Lake County, Indiana residents until 1844, and then the building was taken apart and sent up via raft on the Calumet River and rebuilt on Blue Island as a hotel, called the American House Hotel. It was a boarding house at first, but then it became a home for retired soldiers after the Civil War. The building has undergone a lot of renovation over the years, and today it is a private residence.
