The sprawling city of Chicago, Illinois has an estimated 2.8 million residents inhabiting its domain, and this wonderful city continues to grow both economically and in terms of population. The city of Chicago was founded back in 1833. The Potawatomi Indians were settled in this area before they were forced off the land by the Treaty of Chicago. Jean Baptiste Point de Sable was one of the first settlers in Chicago, a man of both African and European heritage. Fort Dearborn was constructed in 1803. It was built by the Chicago River by troops led under Captain John Whistler. In 1812, the fort was destroyed during the Battle of Fort Dearborn, also called the Fort Dearborn Massacre because of the large amount of women and kids that perished. Some of the Indian tribes decided to fight alongside the British against the new settlers, and this was just one of many battles that Indian tribes fought against the new white settlers during the War of 1812, a war that featured Britain taking on Americans with allied Indian tribes on the British behalf. The Potawatomi tribe attacked Captain Nathan Heald and his garrison as they were getting ready to leave Fort Dearborn and head toward Fort Wayne, Indiana. They were attacked about a mile and a half south of the fort, and the Indians not only killed numerous people, but they also sold some captives as slaves back to the British. The fort was burned, and a controversial monument was constructed by George Pullman, which was taken down because of protests from American Indians. Although called a “massacre”, this battle, along with many others with the Indians are rooted in controversy. After all, the new white settlers were expanding on occupied Indian territory, and many of these tribes had a right to fight for their land, and history sometimes paints a dark picture of the Indians as murderers to a certain extent, while a much more positive, intellectual side of history sees the Native Americans as ingenious people, traders, and ones that were not war mongers. It is this latter history that is now focused on in American high schools, and battles are discussed for historical and learning purposes for the students.

Chicago became a major telecommunications hub over the years after the Indians were forced off the land. Today, the city still maintains its industrial importance and is a big time travel destination for business commuters and tourists. Lake Michigan borders the city of Chicago. This gorgeous lake attracts thousands of tourists every year and is a popular destination for boating, windsurfing, and jet-skiing during the warmer summer months. Chicago has diverse neighborhoods and lots of museums that keep the local history of the city flourishing for the new generations to come. Known as the “Windy City”, Chicago is also famous for its outstanding dining; its local sports teams, such as the Chicago Bears and the Chicago Bulls, both which have won championships for the city. In addition, there are plenty of arts and cultural centers for those that love theatre and art displays, along with breathtaking parks in and around the city. The autumn months bring spectacular color to Chicago, and although winters can be cold and snowy, there is always spring and summer to look forward to. The four seasons are distinct in Chicago, and the changing of the seasons goes along with the ongoing changes that this wonderful city has experienced in the past and will again in the future.
