Gutter Guards are a great solution for water problems in the Chicago area, and at Nombach Home Exteriors, we install them with the highest quality materials and craftsmanship. Living in and around Chicago, gutter guards are a great solution to what our midwest climate throws at our homes.

"Rain gutters" are the little half-curved or sometimes square-ish metal "trays" that run around the edges of a roof, and attach to rainwater pipes at various places - this system keeps the water which is deflected by the roof from being blown back onto the walls and windows of your home. This removal of rainwater can add a very significant extension to the life expectancy of your home: without gutters, no house will last long.

As with so many inventions, the invention of rain gutters created a new problem - clogged rain gutters! As nature cycles through the four seasons, various debris are either forced into these gutters by the roofing system, or else they may land in the gutters by chance: like the leaves falling in Autumn.

At first, people maintained their own gutters by hauling out their ladders several times a year, and manually scraping away all of the muck that had accumulated. While this method of maintenance is inexpensive in terms of labor, it's a very unpleasant task which also carries a very real risk of serious injuries if you overstep your limits on the ladder without realizing it - every year finds no shortage of local news stories about people who fell off their roofing ladders and earned a stay in the hospital (along with an unwanted and probably unpaid "vacation" from work as well).

As people got more and more fed up with the repetitive dangers and unpleasantness of regularly cleaning their rain gutters, various inventors stepped into the marketplace with inventions designed to prevent the gutters from getting clogged (and needing cleaning) in the first place. While there are countless such inventions, they are popularly known as "Gutter Guards", regardless of any specific brand that may be being considered. To give you an idea of how big and varied the gutter guard industry has grown, a Google search for "gutter guards" returns over 120,000 results!

So, how do these gutter guard systems work? Almost every one that this author has seen uses a variant of a screen over the gutter. The small holes of the screen prevent large objects like leaves or dead animals from reaching the gutter system underneath the "guard", while allowing the water runoff from the roof to get where it needs to go: to the storm drains - away from your expensive home! The concept of a screen may sound simple, but there are so many variations I doubt they could all be counted. Some guard systems use zig-zagging lines, some use lined cutouts, some use tent-like screens - the list goes on and on. Because of the diversity in this marketplace, the most important feature for most homeowners will come down to price, any warrantees that may be offered, and the reputation of the company offering the gutter guards.

While these gutter guards all perform the same task in a very similar way, the prices vary wildly - from easily affordable to "time for a second mortgage". While each manufacturer sets their prices based on how effective and how long their own systems will be expected to perform, there is a widely held belief that some of the prices are set by mystics sitting at ouiji boards: the truth is that nobody besides the manufacturers really knows if the prices are actually reflective of the value of their particular "guard". When shopping in a market this big, it's especially important to check references from customers, better business bureaus, and even friends and acquaintances. Anyone who owns a home has probably had some kind of experience with a gutter guard system, and would be happy to tell you what they thought of it.
